Consumer Critiques
I bought this toy for my son and myself, and I should say I have been nicely pleased with its construction, durability and functionality. The toy has taken a number of challenging crashes into buildings, concrete, and trees -- so its tuff, damn tuff, but how well does it fly? Firstly, its far more a powerful bird as compared to any of the smaller battery powered helicopters I have previously purchased or seen. It flies high, 100 feet and it wants a lot of space to definitely appreciate flying it. You can fly it in the backyard, but I get I invest additional time worrying about crashing it into the house than seriously having fun.
The gyro's maintain the copter level and provide pinpoint turning -- Meaning that It spins about whilst hovering in mid-air. The flight challenge is to maintain the copter's hight steady, though moving the copter forward. Once again, turning is not an problem, its balancing the hight and forward direction that is difficult. One particular reviewer mentioned that it will not fly forward or backward nonetheless this is not the case. Immediately after a couple of days of practice each my 9 year old and I could pilot the copter reasonably well. I got about 15 minutes of flying time for just about every hour of charging. With the high understanding curve this can make for some frustration. Is it worth choosing? Yeah, its fun, and my son and I got a major kick out of it -- in particular at night as it lights up! But, personally I wondered if it might not be worth it to invest a tiny way more dollars and shop for a larger copter that is easer to fly.
Bottom Line: This copter is fun, sturdy, will and might well satisfy your wants -- if you place some time in learning to fly it.
Initial R/C helicopter I've ever owned -- not new to the R/C scene, though (and I have a fantastic understanding of how true helicopters fly and operate). It took me a small obtaining utilized to (hence the "hard for beginners" comment), but simple and easy to master (hence the "effortless for intermediates" comment).
A lot of the other critiques have covered most of the problems -- right here are my extra thoughts:
- Flies pretty properly right out of the box -- regularly demands to be trimmed on the rotational axis and, as somebody else noted, preserving height/hover control is a bit difficult.
- The Rapid/Slow toggle switch is excellent for controlling your speed indoors (use the Slow setting). I've however to fly this outdoors (darned winter...mid-December 2010 as I write this), so have not really attempted the Fast setting. It does appear to fly noticeably faster in the Fast setting.
- Only actual unfavorable that I've encountered so far (prevented this from acquiring a complete 5-star rating in my book) is that the excellent manage is a touch lacking -- one of the wires soldered onto the On/Off switch came loose on the 2nd flight, requiring me to have to re-solder the wire (and asking for my wife's help, as it was honestly a 3-hand operation).
And it looks like I got a deal, the price seems to have gone up by about $20 considering the fact that I bought it!
